Luka Modric capped off his 40th birthday week in style by scoring his first goal for AC Milan during a 1-0 victory over Bologna at the San Siro on Sunday.

The Croatian veteran, who joined Milan on a free transfer after 13 years at Real Madrid, struck decisively in the second half. Starting the move himself in midfield, Modric sprinted into the box to connect with Alexis Saelemaekers’ low cross, finishing with a composed first-time strike. The six-time Champions League winner celebrated passionately as Milan claimed their first home win of the season.

The night was not without drama, however. Coach Massimiliano Allegri was sent off late in the match after erupting in anger when referee Matteo Marcenaro overturned a penalty awarded to Milan. Substitute Christopher Nkunku appeared to have won the spot-kick after going down under pressure from Jhon Lucumi and Remo Freuler. But following a VAR review, the decision was reversed, triggering Allegri’s dismissal.

Adrien Rabiot also impressed on his Milan debut, while goalkeeper Mike Maignan limped off with a calf issue, adding to France’s injury concerns ahead of international fixtures. Milan also struck the woodwork three times before sealing victory, climbing to fifth in Serie A with six points, level with Cremonese and Roma.

Earlier in Serie A, Ademola Lookman was ruled out of Atalanta’s upcoming Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain. Coach Ivan Juric confirmed the Nigerian forward remains sidelined after his failed summer move to Inter Milan.

Lookman, who delivered a hat-trick in Atalanta’s Europa League final triumph over Bayer Leverkusen last year, has not played this season following his attempt to force a transfer. Juric stressed that he only wants players committed to the club, leaving Lookman’s future uncertain despite being under contract until 2027. Atalanta warmed up for their Champions League opener with a 4-1 win over Lecce, featuring a brace from Charles De Ketelaere.
