In a heartwarming show of sportsmanship and solidarity, several players from Nigeria’s Super Falcons paid a hospital visit to South African forward Gabriela Salgado following the serious leg injury she sustained during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semi-final match between both teams in Morocco.
The incident occurred in the 88th minute of the high-stakes clash on Tuesday, when Salgado was stretchered off the field after suffering a painful mid-shaft fracture of her left leg. The injury visibly distressed players from both sides, momentarily shifting the intense competitive mood to one of concern and empathy.
The South African Football Association later confirmed that Salgado underwent a successful surgical procedure at the Mohamed VI University Hospital in Casablanca. She is, however, expected to be sidelined for the rest of the year as she recovers from the serious injury.

Despite the emotional moment, Nigeria went on to win the thrilling encounter 2–1, courtesy of a late match-winning goal from Gloria Alozie. Yet the result was overshadowed by concern for the injured South African striker.
On Wednesday, Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade led a group of teammates to the hospital in Casablanca to visit Salgado. The Nigerian players presented the Banyana Banyana star with a signed Super Falcons jersey and a heartfelt note expressing their sympathy and encouragement during this difficult time.
The message delivered by the team read in part: “The entire Super Falcons of Nigeria family, from players and coaches to staff were profoundly saddened to learn of the serious injury sustained by Gabriela Salgado during yesterday’s match. Our immediate thoughts are solely with her for comfort, care, and the recovery journey ahead.”
The statement went on to express unwavering solidarity with the South African team, saying: “The spirit of competition instantly fades in moments like these, replaced by a shared sense of care for a fellow athlete. As fellow members of this football community, The Super Falcons NGR stands firmly alongside Banyana Banyana in solidarity and support.”
The message concluded with best wishes for Salgado’s healing and a hopeful return to the pitch in the future: “Our collective wish is for Gabriela’s steady healing, renewed strength, and a return to the pitch when she is ready, surrounded by the unwavering support of the team and community.”
As the tournament progresses, Nigeria’s Super Falcons are now preparing to face the host nation, Morocco, in the WAFCON final on Saturday. A victory would mark their 10th continental championship, further solidifying their dominance in African women’s football. Still, their gesture toward Salgado serves as a reminder of the humanity that transcends competition.
