Nigeria’s Super Eagles have surged to 26th place in the latest FIFA World Ranking released on Monday by the world football governing body, reflecting a significant rise in their global standing.

The ranking, published on FIFA’s official website, shows that Nigeria climbed 12 places from their previous position, recording a points increase of +79.09.

The Super Eagles’ jump from 38th to 26th follows their impressive outing at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where the team delivered a performance widely regarded as one of their most cohesive in recent years.

Nigeria ended the tournament in third place after narrowly defeating the Pharaohs of Egypt last Saturday in the playoff match. Under the guidance of head coach Eric Chelle, the team displayed strong coordination, discipline and teamwork throughout the competition.

The Super Eagles lost just one of their seven matches at the tournament, suffering a semi-final defeat to host nation Morocco via a penalty shootout. Despite missing out on the final, the third-place finish provided consolation and underlined the team’s progress.

At the top of the global rankings, the usual heavyweights maintained their dominance. Spain lead the standings, followed by Argentina, France, England, Brazil, Portugal, the Netherlands, Morocco, Belgium and Germany.

Within Africa, Morocco sit at the summit, ahead of Senegal, Nigeria, Algeria, Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Tunisia, Congo DR and Mali.

Nigeria’s steady rise on the international football scene has become increasingly evident, with the 2025 AFCON serving as a clear demonstration of the team’s growing stature. Beyond improving their continental ranking, the Super Eagles’ performance highlighted a squad that has matured into a formidable African force, combining local talent with international exposure and drawing global attention.

The Federal Government has also commended the team for their resilience and determination during the tournament, describing their performance as a reflection of discipline, unity and perseverance that align with the Nigerian spirit.

“Football has its highs and lows, but your effort, commitment, and fighting spirit throughout this tournament have earned the respect and gratitude of Nigerians at home and abroad.

“You reminded us that wearing the green and white is about courage, unity, and never giving up. Hold your heads high. Learn from this experience, stay united, and return stronger,” the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said in a statement.

What you should know
Nigeria’s rise to 26th in the FIFA World Ranking is one of the country’s biggest single jumps in recent years and reflects the impact of a strong AFCON campaign.

The Super Eagles’ performance in Morocco showed improved structure, tactical discipline and mental strength, particularly in high-pressure matches.

Finishing third at AFCON has boosted Nigeria’s reputation across Africa and globally, reinforcing their status as a leading football nation and raising expectations ahead of future international competitions.
