The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set to rekindle their long-standing football rivalry with Ghana’s Black Stars today as both teams meet in the 2025 Unity Cup semi-final showdown.
Often dubbed the “Jollof Derby,” the Nigeria-Ghana fixture is one of Africa’s most storied rivalries, having been played 56 times across various competitions. Ghana currently holds the upper hand with 25 wins, while Nigeria has claimed 13 victories. The other 18 matches have ended in stalemates, reflecting the intensity and balance that have long defined their encounters.
This year’s edition of the Unity Cup marks a return of the tournament after a 21-year absence. Originally launched to foster camaraderie and cultural exchange among African and Caribbean communities in the UK, the competition has once again brought together footballing nations from both regions. The 2025 tournament features Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago.
Jamaica has already secured a spot in the final following a narrow 3–2 victory over Trinidad & Tobago on Tuesday. The winner of today’s Nigeria-Ghana clash will face the Jamaicans in the final, setting up a potential thriller to close the historic revival of the Unity Cup.
The inaugural edition of the Unity Cup was held in 2004, with Nigeria emerging victorious. The Super Eagles defeated the Republic of Ireland 3–0 in their first match and followed up with a 2–0 triumph over Jamaica to claim the title.
Today’s semi-final encounter will take place at the Gtech Community Stadium in London. Fans can catch the action live at 7:00 PM Nigerian time on Afrosport, DStv, and NFF TV.
