State Government Approves Free Transport Fare For Police Officers
The Lagos State Government has approved three months of free transportation for police officers using the state’s integrated public transportation system.
The initiative was launched on Wednesday as part of efforts to support the welfare of police personnel and recognise their role in maintaining peace and security across the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Lagos, ASP Aminat Mayegun, disclosed this in a statement.
According to Mayegun, 2,000 Cowry Cards were handed over to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, FCID Annex, Lagos, Simeon Akpanudom, who represented the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, at the launch.
She said the cards would give beneficiaries unlimited free access to major public transport services in Lagos for three months.
The services covered by the initiative include the Blue Line and Red Line rail services, electric water boats and Bus Rapid Transit buses.
Mayegun said the initiative was introduced through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation Logistics.
She added that the gesture formed part of activities marking the third anniversary of the Lagos Blue Line Rail.
The state government is also considering a 50 per cent fare reduction for police officers after the three-month free transportation period ends.
Akpanudom, who represented the Inspector-General of Police, thanked Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the initiative and other measures aimed at improving the welfare of police officers in Lagos.
He said the transportation support would reduce the financial burden faced by officers who travel across the state while carrying out their duties.
The AIG said the gesture would also boost the morale of police personnel and strengthen their ability to protect lives and property.
He noted that police officers play an important role in creating a secure environment for residents, businesses and visitors in Lagos.
Akpanudom also commended the Lagos State Government for its continued support for the Nigeria Police Force through interventions facilitated by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund.
He further acknowledged other welfare initiatives by the state government and appreciated Air Peace for offering rebates and special boarding arrangements to police officers on local and international routes.
The AIG called on other state governments, organisations and individuals to support police welfare, stressing that better support for security personnel would help them perform their responsibilities more effectively.
He said the transportation initiative would further strengthen the relationship between the Lagos State Government and the Nigeria Police Force in promoting public safety and good governance.
