South-East PDP Threatens Exit Over National Secretary Nomination

The South-East Zonal Executive Committee (ZEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned that it may reassess its affiliation with the party if its endorsement of Sunday Ude-Okoye as national secretary is not respected.

This stance was revealed in a communique issued after a meeting held at the government house in Enugu on Wednesday.

Zonal Chairman, Ali Odefa, emphasized that the South-East has remained a reliable base of support for the PDP since its inception, even as defections occur in other zones.

The committee urged the National Working Committee (NWC) to maintain its earlier position, allowing the Deputy National Secretary to serve in acting capacity until the National Executive Committee ratifies a permanent appointment, in line with the PDP Governors’ Forum’s recommendation already adopted by the NWC.

The committee clearly backed Sunday Udeh-Okoye to fill the vacant national secretary position for the remainder of the term.

The caucus warned that any further delay or dismissal of its position could result in a reevaluation of the region’s loyalty to the party.

It stressed the South-East’s role in recent PDP gains, including bringing opposition members back into the fold in Enugu.

The ZEC insisted that its current recommendation must be implemented without delay to put an end to the ongoing dispute.

There has been an ongoing power tussle between Ude-Okoye and Samuel Anyanwu over who holds rightful claim to the national secretary post.

What you should know

The South-East PDP has remained one of the most loyal blocs of the party since its founding.

Their insistence on Sunday Udeh-Okoye as National Secretary signals a demand for greater recognition and fairness in internal party appointments. Failure to honor this demand could fracture long-standing party unity in the zone.
