The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) has launched a comprehensive new initiative aimed at significantly expanding employment opportunities across Nigeria’s vital micro, small, and medium enterprises sector.

The initiative, branded “GROW Nigerian,” represents what agency officials describe as a transformative approach to tackling the country’s persistent unemployment challenges.

During a meeting in Abuja, SMEDAN’s Director General, Mr. Charles Odii said the strategy targets creating hundreds of thousands of new positions in a sector that already employs an estimated 84% of the nation’s workforce.

What distinguishes ‘GROW Nigerian’ from previous initiatives is its integrated ecosystem approach, Odii explained.

The meeting had representatives from various business associations and development partners, present.

Odii said going forward, SMEDAN, through the GROW Nigerian strategy, would be focusing on eight critical sectors of the Nigerian economy.

The eight critical areas are agriculture value chain, fashion and textile industry, tourism and hospitality, manufacturing and production, education, Nigerian digital economy, innovation and new tech adopti

He expressed optimism that through some of the programmes being implemented by SMEDAN, the agency would be able to address some of the identified challenges facing MSMEs in Nigeria.

Some of these challenges include difficulty in accessing capital and funding for business ventures, high operating costs, regulatory burdens, which include issues such as multiple taxation, high registration costs, and bureaucratic bottlenecks, and a lack of skilled workforce and training opportunities.

The Director said, collaborating with key partners and stakeholders, empowering entrepreneurs with the right combination of what they need to grow – knowledge, capital, team support, access to market, network and ecosystem support, will help build sustainable businesses that will create jobs, improve quality of life and deliver value for all.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

The “GROW Nigerian” initiative represents the most significant policy intervention in the MSME space since the economic disruptions of the pandemic period.

This signals renewed government focus on the sector, widely acknowledged as Nigeria’s most potent vehicle for inclusive growth and employment generation.
