In a candid revelation that has sparked conversations about mental health and self-deception, Nigerian Afrobeat sensation Yemi Alade has disclosed a deeply personal struggle that left her battling depression for several days.

The “Johnny” hitmaker, speaking during an intimate interview with renowned media personality Chude Jideonwo, revealed that she spent three years incorrectly stating her age as 22, only to experience a jarring reality check when she realized she was actually 25.

“There was a time someone asked me how old I was, and for about three years I kept saying 22,” Alade confessed during the interview. “Then one day I calculated it and realized I was already 25.”

The discovery proved to be more than just an embarrassing miscalculation. For the chart-topping artist, it triggered a mental health crisis that left her reeling.

“I was depressed for a few days because my mind couldn’t process it,” she admitted. “It was mental—for three years I didn’t know my age.”

The revelation sheds light on the often-overlooked pressures faced by entertainers in an industry where youth is frequently commodified and age can become a sensitive subject. Alade’s experience raises questions about how repeated falsehoods, even seemingly harmless ones, can create psychological dissonance.

The Grammy-nominated singer, known for hits like “Knack Am” and “Shekere,” described the period as both challenging and transformative. According to Alade, the experience served as a wake-up call about the dangers of self-deception and its potential impact on mental well-being.

“The experience taught her how easily self-deception can impact one’s mental health,” sources close to the singer noted, with Alade herself describing those years as “a tough but eye-opening period” in her life.

Alade’s openness about her mental health struggles comes at a time when conversations about psychological wellness are gaining momentum in Nigeria’s entertainment industry. Her willingness to discuss depression—still stigmatized in many African communities—has been praised by fans and mental health advocates alike.

The singer, who has become one of Africa’s most successful female artists with numerous awards and international collaborations, continues to use her platform to address important social issues beyond her music.

As of press time, Alade has not specified during which period of her career this age confusion occurred, but her candid discussion has resonated with many who struggle with the pressure to present a certain image in public life.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Nigerian Afrobeat star Yemi Alade’s confession about unknowingly misstating her age for three years—believing she was 22 when she was actually 25—underscores a critical mental health lesson: self-deception, even about seemingly trivial matters, can have serious psychological consequences.

Her resulting depression highlights how repeated falsehoods can create mental dissonance and the importance of confronting uncomfortable truths. Most significantly, her openness breaks important ground in destigmatizing mental health discussions within African entertainment circles, reminding us that authenticity and self-awareness are essential to psychological well-being.
