Global superstar Rihanna is set to release her first new song in over three years, titled “Friend of Mine,” this Friday. The track, crafted for the soundtrack of the highly anticipated Smurfs movie reboot, marks a significant milestone in the Barbadian icon’s illustrious career, signaling her return to music after a prolonged hiatus.

The announcement, accompanied by a vibrant new trailer for the film, has ignited fervor among fans who have been eagerly awaiting fresh material from the pop sensation.

Rihanna, who has not released a solo single since 2022’s Oscar-nominated “Lift Me Up” from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack, is pulling out all the stops for this project.

Not only is she lending her voice to the upbeat, Afrobeats-inspired dance track, but she’s also deeply embedded in the Smurfs film as both a star and a producer.

Voicing the beloved character Smurfette, Rihanna joins an all-star ensemble cast that includes John Goodman as Papa Smurf, James Corden, Nick Offerman, Sandra Oh, and a host of other luminaries such as Daniel Levy, Natasha Lyonne, and Kurt Russell.

Directed by Chris Miller, known for his work on Shrek the Third and Puss in Boots, the film promises a fresh take on the iconic Smurfs franchise, with a plot centered on Smurfette leading her fellow Smurfs to rescue Papa Smurf from the clutches of sinister wizards.

The movie is slated to hit theaters on July 18, 2025, but the spotlight is already on Rihanna’s musical contribution.

The timing of “Friend of Mine” couldn’t be more poignant. Rihanna’s recent appearance at the 2025 Met Gala, where she proudly displayed her baby bump, reaffirmed her status as a cultural force who defies convention.

The Smurfs project, coupled with the release of “Friend of Mine,” suggests that Rihanna is ready to reclaim her musical throne, even as she navigates motherhood and her entrepreneurial ventures.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
As the world awaits the drop of “Friend of Mine” on May 16, the song is more than just a soundtrack single—it’s a testament to Rihanna’s enduring influence and versatility.

Whether she’s voicing a blue-hued heroine, producing a major motion picture, or delivering a summer banger, Rihanna continues to redefine what it means to be a superstar.
