Real Madrid advanced to the Champions League quarter-finals after a dramatic penalty shootout against rivals Atletico Madrid, winning 4-2 on penalties following a 1-0 defeat after extra time on Wednesday.
Diego Simeone’s side started strongly at the Metropolitano, taking the lead just 27 seconds into the match through Conor Gallagher. Despite dominating large periods of the game, Atletico couldn’t break Madrid’s resilience, with Thibaut Courtois making crucial saves to deny Julian Alvarez and Angel Correa.
The biggest moment of normal time came when Kylian Mbappe won a penalty for Madrid, but Vinicius Junior fired his spot-kick over the bar.
Atletico seemed likely to end a history of being dominated by Madrid in Europe but Los Blancos have the knack of survival down to a fine art and took the game to penalties.
In the shoot-out Julian Alvarez scored for Atletico but his effort was ruled out as he touched the ball twice because of a slip as he shot.
Marcos Llorente also missed for Atletico and Madrid’s Antonio Rudiger struck the winner for the reigning champions.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side now faces Arsenal in the quarter-finals as they continue their quest for a record-extending 16th Champions League title.
