President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to establish a committee to align the proposed national census with the government’s financial realities. This development was disclosed on Monday, February 24, 2025, following a meeting between the President and officials of the National Population Commission, led by Chairman Nasir Kwarra.

In a statement titled “Nigeria Moves Closer to Fresh Census,” the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, outlined the challenges that have delayed the census since the last exercise in November 2006. He noted that inadequate funding, insecurity, the COVID-19 pandemic, logistical issues, and political transitions have contributed to the repeated postponements, despite the National Population Commission’s investment in digital technology to enhance accuracy and transparency. The 2023 census was deferred due to budget constraints.

During the meeting, President Tinubu emphasized the need for a clear and structured approach, stating that the continuous delays cannot continue. He announced that a committee would be set up to critically assess the challenges, determine funding sources, and outline the next steps before making an official proclamation.

The President stressed the importance of accurate demographic data for national planning, explaining that a proper census would enable the government to make informed decisions regarding employment, agriculture, and food security. He reiterated that understanding the country’s population is essential for effective governance and sustainable development.
