President Bola Tinubu landed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Thursday night to attend the 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly of Heads of State and Government. He was welcomed by Ethiopian officials and Nigerian diplomats, including Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar, who later briefed him on the summit’s key developments.

Among Nigeria’s diplomatic successes was the re-election of Amb. Bankole Adeoye as AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security. Additionally, Nigeria retained its seat on the AU Peace and Security Council, reinforcing its leadership role in continental stability.

Several top Nigerian officials, including Finance Minister Wale Edun, Defence Minister Abubakar Badaru, and Information Minister Muhammed Idris, attended the briefing. The session stretched into the early hours of Friday as discussions covered Nigeria’s role in regional security and governance.

This year’s AU summit focuses on the theme, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.” The agenda highlights reparatory justice, racial healing, and Africa’s stance on global equity. President Tinubu is expected to address the AU Peace and Security Council, discussing pressing security issues, particularly the escalating conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Additionally, the president will take part in sessions on health financing, the establishment of an African Credit Rating Agency, and climate change initiatives. The AU noted that discussions on reparations extend beyond historical injustices, addressing present-day socioeconomic inequalities affecting people of African descent worldwide.

President Tinubu is scheduled to return to Abuja on Monday following the conclusion of the summit.
