Police summon APC senator over threat to ‘kill Accord members’

The Osun State Police Command has summoned Francis Fadahunsi, the senator representing Osun East Senatorial District, following a controversial statement linked to the ongoing governorship election campaign in the state.

Fadahunsi was asked to appear before the police after a video showing him speaking at an All Progressives Congress campaign event in Ilesa went viral on social media.

His remarks, which were directed at supporters of the Accord Party, sparked public concern and drew criticism over fears that such statements could fuel violence ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

The invitation was contained in a letter dated August 11, 2026, and signed by Samuel Etaifo Erale, the Commissioner of Police in charge of election matters in Osun State.

The police directed the senator to report to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Osogbo at 11am on Wednesday, August 12, to explain the circumstances surrounding the remarks attributed to him during the campaign programme.

According to the police, the statement had been circulated widely across social media and other electronic platforms.

The command said the remarks were being investigated because they were considered capable of threatening, intimidating or inciting people during the election period.

The development comes as political tension continues to rise in Osun ahead of Saturday’s governorship election, which has attracted intense campaigns from the major political parties and their supporters.

A video from the APC campaign event showed Fadahunsi using strong language while addressing party supporters in Yoruba and referring to members of the Accord Party.

The video quickly spread online, leading to calls for authorities to investigate the senator’s comments.

Following the public reaction, Fadahunsi’s representatives sought to explain the remarks as a political call for voters to defeat the Accord Party through the ballot rather than through physical attacks.

His team said the senator was referring to defeating the party during the election and that the statement should not be understood as an instruction to carry out violence against its members.

The explanation came amid growing concerns over political violence in Osun, particularly as the election draws closer and campaigns enter their final stage.

Governor Ademola Adeleke, who is seeking another term under the Accord platform, has previously accused supporters of the APC of using thugs to attack members of his party.

The allegations have added to concerns about possible clashes between supporters of rival political groups before and during the election.
