Summary

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced on Thursday that 11,566 police officers have been withdrawn from VIP protection duties, following President Bola Tinubu’s directive aimed at reshaping national security priorities.

Speaking at the strategic officers conference, Egbetokun explained that the reassigned officers have already begun moving into underserved communities where security needs are most urgent. He described the presidential directive as a calculated restructuring of policing efforts, driven by the country’s escalating security challenges rather than emotional considerations.

Nigerian Police Officers

According to him, this shift reflects a renewed commitment to the core duty of the Nigeria Police Force, safeguarding citizens, strengthening community defense, and maintaining public order.

He emphasised that the change is “a patriotic, forward-looking, and operationally prudent measure” meant to boost the Force’s manpower at pivotal frontline locations. He added that the expanded deployment will enhance operations such as large-scale civilian protection, rural and township security reinforcement, increased visibility patrols, improved investigative response, and tactical containment of emerging threats.

Egbetokun stressed that the intention is to redirect personnel from “personalised security duties” to broader public safety roles where their presence can create meaningful impact.

Decisive Implementation

Addressing senior officers, the IGP said that although the Force is determined to enforce the directive swiftly, it must also proceed carefully to prevent misinterpretations or manipulations by individuals seeking to exploit the transition.

To prevent misinformation, he said, detailed guidelines outlining procedures, safeguards, timelines, and accountability mechanisms will be issued soon. These will first be communicated internally, then to the public through official channels to ensure clarity and prevent impersonation or the spread of false narratives.

He noted that the phased communication strategy is necessary to block “opportunistic actors” from twisting the intent of the initiative or using the period of transition to mislead the public. The IGP reaffirmed that the Force is committed to ensuring the new measure strengthens policing, protects institutional integrity, and closes loopholes exploited by illegitimate security actors.

President Bola Tinubu, who declared a nationwide security emergency on Wednesday, also approved additional recruitment into both the Nigerian Armed Forces and the police.

He directed that officers removed from VIP duties should undergo “crash training” to prepare them for deployment to high-risk zones. Tinubu also approved the use of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps as training hubs for new police recruits.

What You Should Know

This policy marks one of the largest security redeployments in recent years, redirecting thousands of officers from VIP protection to community-focused policing.

The move aligns with the government’s broader emergency response to rising insecurity, aiming to strengthen frontline operations, increase visibility in vulnerable areas, and restore public confidence in national security systems.
