The Lagos State Police Command has formally concluded that former Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in Ondo State, Bamidele Akingboye, did not die naturally but was murdered.
This confirmation was disclosed exclusively to Channels Television by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olorundare Jimoh.
CP Jimoh revealed that the police had received the autopsy report and were now positioned to intensify investigative efforts and commence prosecution. According to him, the autopsy—completed on September 11—combined with fresh intelligence, prompted the arrest and renewed detention of seven out of the fourteen members of the Akingboye family earlier invited for questioning.
He added that the police were awaiting legal guidance from the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) to determine the next legal steps.
Before the new arrests, detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, had taken nine close relatives and aides into custody for interrogation regarding the circumstances surrounding Akingboye’s death.

One of the significant concerns raised early in the probe was a suspicious ₦50 million transfer from the deceased’s bank account, reportedly shared by some immediate family members. This transaction, among other developments, deepened investigators’ suspicions.
“With the toxicology findings concluded, we await advice from the DPP so prosecution can begin against anyone found culpable of murder,” CP Jimoh said.
Channels Television had previously interviewed several family members at the crime scene, with many expressing faith that the police would carry out a credible and unbiased investigation.
Akingboye died under unclear circumstances on September 3. According to relatives and aides, his body was discovered in the backyard of his residence, prompting widespread concern. His first son, Samuel Akingboye, who lives in Ondo State, notified the police and demanded a thorough investigation to uncover what truly happened.
CP Olorundare Jimoh has reiterated his determination to ensure that the facts surrounding Akingboye’s death are fully exposed and that anyone involved faces justice.
