Security operatives in Kaduna State have taken into custody a man suspected to be an agent involved in vote-buying, after allegedly being found with about ₦25 million intended to sway voters ahead of today’s bye-elections.

The spokesman of the Kaduna State Police Command, DSP Mansir Hassan, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Saturday. He identified the suspect as Shehu Patangi, who was apprehended in the early hours of the morning at a well-known hotel along Turunku Road in Kaduna metropolis. According to the police, Patangi was reportedly coordinating the disbursement of funds to influence voters in the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency bye-election.

The statement further revealed that a total of ₦25.963 million in cash was recovered from the suspect, which investigators believe was set aside to induce voters and undermine the integrity of the electoral process. During initial questioning, the police said Patangi admitted to the offense and pleaded for leniency.

The Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State, Rabiu Muhammad, commended other security agencies for their collaboration and swift response that led to the arrest. He also issued a stern warning that anyone, irrespective of their status, caught attempting to manipulate or disrupt the electoral process would be dealt with according to the law.

He assured the public of the police command’s dedication to ensuring maximum security before, during, and after the elections. Muhammad urged residents to come out and exercise their civic responsibility peacefully, without fear or intimidation.
