The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has firmly denied allegations that it sells substandard petrol with a high burn rate. The company issued a statement on Saturday through its spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, in response to a viral video claiming that NNPC petrol does not last long in fuel tanks.

A video had surfaced online featuring a content creator who conducted an experiment comparing petrol from Dangote Refinery and NNPC. He claimed to have purchased a litre of Dangote petrol from an MRS filling station in Alapere, Lagos, at N925 and a litre of NNPC petrol from Ojodu Berger at N945. According to his test, the generator powered by Dangote petrol lasted 33 minutes, while the one using NNPC fuel stopped after 17 minutes.

Reacting to this claim, NNPCL dismissed the experiment as baseless and misleading. The company stated, “The NNPC Ltd strongly refutes the false and misleading allegations made in a viral video circulating online, which claims that NNPC fuel does not last. This assertion is baseless and entirely unfounded, originating from unverified and amateur research that lacks credibility, accuracy, and professional oversight.”

The company further emphasized that its petrol is carefully formulated with high-quality components to ensure efficiency, durability, and environmental sustainability. Additionally, NNPCL clarified that a significant percentage of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) sold at its filling stations in Lagos is sourced from Dangote Refinery, which adheres to strict industry standards.

“It is important to emphasise that a significant percentage of Premium Motor Spirit sold at NNPC retail stations in Lagos—where this deceptive video was created—is sourced from the Dangote Refinery, a strategic partner in promoting local production and energy security. Dangote Refinery adheres to strict industry standards, guaranteeing the quality of petroleum products supplied to our consumers,” the NNPCL stated.

The company described the viral video as a deliberate attempt to misinform the public and damage its reputation. “We will not tolerate deliberate misinformation designed to undermine our operations and mislead Nigerians,” it stressed. Furthermore, NNPCL warned that it would take legal action against individuals or groups spreading false information about its brand and operations, holding them accountable under the law.

Finally, NNPCL urged the public to disregard such misleading content and instead rely on verified sources for accurate information. The company reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring fuel availability, affordability, and quality while maintaining global industry standards.
