Anticipation is high across Africa as the African Union Commission and the International Committee of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) gear up to unveil the host city for the 2025 edition on May 13 at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The final shortlist pits two cultural and entertainment hubs against each other: Lagos, Nigeria, and Gauteng Province, South Africa, both lauded for their dynamic music landscapes, rich cultural identities, and proven expertise in staging large-scale events.
In 2024, the AU formally invited bids from both nations, reaching out directly to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi to highlight the potential advantages of hosting Africa’s flagship music awards. Since then, rigorous assessments, stakeholder consultations, and committee reviews have been conducted.
Lagos, the global epicenter of Afrobeats, emerges as a frontrunner. A statement noted, “Beyond its electrifying music scene, Lagos offers robust infrastructure, including urban rail networks, enhanced water transport, and a flourishing real estate sector, positioning it to accommodate thousands of global attendees.”
Gauteng, celebrated as the birthplace of Amapiano and Kwaito genres, presents a formidable case. “Cities like Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Soweto merge cultural heritage with world-class event capabilities, backed by experience hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup and major festivals,” the statement added.
Both governors have championed their bids, emphasizing prospects for tourism expansion, employment opportunities, and youth empowerment.
Adenrele Niyi, AFRIMA’s Chief Experience Officer, highlighted the broader impact: “Hosting AFRIMA transcends music—it elevates global recognition, stimulates economies, and fosters legacy initiatives like skills programs and industry forums.”
With an estimated 400 million viewers worldwide, the chosen city will gain unparalleled visibility. Previous hosts, including Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal, have reaped enduring cultural and economic rewards.
As Africa awaits the announcement, all eyes are on whether Lagos or Gauteng will claim the honor. Regardless, AFRIMA 2025 is set to spotlight the continent’s musical brilliance, unity, and innovation, Niyi concluded.
