Croatia’s football icon and captain, Luka Modric, has officially signed a one-year contract with Italian giants AC Milan, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his illustrious career at the age of 39.
The announcement was made by the Serie A club on Monday, ending weeks of speculation surrounding the midfielder’s next destination after his exit from Real Madrid.
Modric, who will turn 40 in September, has been at the heart of Real Madrid’s midfield since his move from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012. His decision to leave the Spanish capital came after the conclusion of the Club World Cup, prompting Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri to hint last week that the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner was poised to join the Rossoneri.
“AC Milan are delighted to announce Luka Modric has signed a contract with the club until 30 June 2026, with an option for a one-year extension until 30 June 2027,” the 19-time Serie A champions said in their official statement.

Earlier on Monday, Modric arrived in Milan to complete his medical examinations. However, reports from Italian media suggest he will not link up with his new teammates on the training pitch until August, giving him time to settle in and adjust ahead of the new campaign.
In a short video message shared on the club’s social media platforms, Modric expressed his joy and optimism about the move.
“I’m very happy to be here to start a new chapter in my career,” said Modric, wearing a broad smile. “A big hug to everyone.”
His arrival reunites him with a club steeped in European history and ambition. AC Milan is preparing for the upcoming season under the guidance of Allegri, who returned to the club this summer. Allegri, who previously managed Milan from 2010 to 2014 and delivered the 2010/11 Serie A title, is looking to rebuild and reinforce the team after years of inconsistency.
Modric’s wealth of experience, creativity, and leadership are expected to play a pivotal role in Milan’s domestic and continental ambitions. The Croatian midfielder has amassed numerous accolades, including five UEFA Champions League titles and three La Liga championships during his time with Real Madrid, establishing himself as one of the finest playmakers of his generation.
AC Milan’s competitive fixtures for the 2025/26 season will kick off on August 17 with an Italian Cup tie, where fans may get their first glimpse of Modric in action wearing the famous red and black jersey.
