Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano believes his team can defy expectations and upset European champions Paris Saint-Germain in their Club World Cup last-16 clash on Sunday, despite acknowledging the significant gulf in quality between the two sides.
Speaking ahead of the match at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Mascherano described the encounter as a “huge challenge” but encouraged his players to dream big. “We will try to be up to the standard, we will try to do things in the best way we can, and why can’t we dream of being able to shock them?” he said.
Inter Miami, led by Lionel Messi, impressed during the group stage and finished behind Palmeiras in Group A. Despite their underdog status, Mascherano believes the team has earned their place and should not be underestimated. “We know we are taking on an opponent of unique power, one of the best in the world, but this is football,” he noted.
He added, “We are not naive… that doesn’t mean they can kill us in advance. We will fight. That’s what it’s about.”
The coach expressed relief that Messi, 38, is now with Inter Miami rather than PSG, noting that “everything around Leo generates a lot of interest” and praising the calm he brings to the squad.
The game will also be a personal reunion for Mascherano, who will go head-to-head with PSG manager Luis Enrique — a former coach of his at Barcelona, where they won the treble together in 2015. “Luis is one of the best coaches I’ve had in my career,” said Mascherano, calling it “a challenge” to compete against someone of his caliber.
Meanwhile, Miami midfielder Federico Redondo acknowledged the mountain his side must climb. “The reality is they are the best team in the world,” he said, adding that his legendary father, Fernando Redondo, simply advised him to “enjoy it” and continue their strong run of form.
