Maresca Urges Chelsea to Lean on Team Effort Not on Cole Palmer

Chelsea manager, Enzo Maresca in his first season at Stamford Bridge has challenged his underperforming squad to pull together during a period when star midfielder Cole Palmer is in a temporary slump.

Palmer, an essential player for the team, has contributed 14 goals and provided six assists in the Premier League this season, yet his form has dipped recently—with his last goal coming in mid-January and his most recent assist on December 1.

Chelsea, once just two points behind runaway leaders Liverpool in mid-December, have fallen to seventh place after suffering three defeats in their last four league matches, although they remain only one point behind fourth-placed Manchester City. Despite these setbacks, Maresca remains upbeat as he prepares his side for an upcoming clash with rock-bottom Southampton.

“I’m not concerned about Cole because, at the end of the day, he’s a human being, and during the season, every player can have moments when they struggle a little bit more,” Maresca told reporters on Monday. He added, “The problem with Cole is probably that we rely on him for everything, and I’ve said since the start that we need to rely on the team. Of course, we need big players—top players like Cole—but we are not worried about him at all.”

Maresca acknowledged that there is an expectation for Palmer to produce a goal or an assist in every game, but he also stressed that individual performance often mirrors the overall performance of the team. “We are struggling to score goals and need to be more clinical when we get chances,” he explained.

Despite recent difficulties and a dismal run of form, Maresca remains optimistic about Chelsea’s prospects, emphasizing that the team’s identity is still very much intact. “Even against Villa in that 2-1 defeat, I think the identity was there. The way we played on and off the ball was very similar to what we’ve been doing all season,” he said. “I feel if we can get one win, we could go on a good run and build momentum again. That is what I believe the players need at this moment.”

With the title race tightening and Chelsea positioned just one point behind Manchester City, Maresca’s call for a greater collective effort comes at a critical juncture. His remarks underline the importance of relying less on any single player—even one as talented as Cole Palmer—and more on the cohesive strength of the entire team to regain their form and secure vital victories as the season draws to a close.
