Manchester United have secured the signing of Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a deal reportedly worth £62.5 million ($83 million).
The 26-year-old becomes the first signing under new manager Ruben Amorim as United look to rebuild after a disappointing season.
Cunha has agreed to a five-year contract, with the option for an additional 12 months, and completed his medical in Manchester over the weekend. The transfer remains subject to visa approval and final registration.
In an official statement, United said: “Manchester United has reached agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the signing of Matheus Cunha. Everyone at Manchester United looks forward to welcoming Matheus to Old Trafford.”
Cunha leaves Wolves after a productive spell, having scored 18 goals in all competitions this season, which earned him the club’s Player of the Year award. Since joining from Atletico Madrid in January 2023, he scored 33 goals in 92 appearances for the Midlands side.
Wolves confirmed it was a club-record fee received, and expressed gratitude to Cunha for his impact at Molineux.
The striker will now link up with the Brazil national team for their World Cup qualifier against Ecuador on Friday — the debut match of Carlo Ancelotti as Brazil’s new head coach.
Cunha arrives at Old Trafford to bolster a United attack that struggled for goals throughout the season, culminating in a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham and a 15th-place Premier League finish, the club’s lowest since 1973-74.
Despite financial limitations due to Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules and missing out on Champions League qualification, Amorim has made clear his intention to strengthen both the squad and academy.
Speaking on United’s post-season tour of Asia, Amorim said: “We have a plan… It’s not going to change so much because we have the fair play financial rules. We are not allowed to do much in this summer… so we are prepared for that.”
United have also been linked with Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, as the club continues to explore cost-effective ways to reshape their attacking line.
