US authorities on Friday confirmed the arrest of the man accused of fatally shooting right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, ending a tense nationwide manhunt.
“We got him,” Utah Governor Spencer Cox announced during a press briefing.
The suspect was identified as Tyler Robinson. According to Cox, the breakthrough came after one of Robinson’s relatives confided in a family friend, who then alerted law enforcement.

The arrest brought a sense of relief to a deeply divided country that had been shaken by Wednesday’s shocking political killing.
Kirk, aged 31, was struck by a single bullet to the neck while delivering a speech at Utah Valley University, where he was addressing a large crowd.

Known for his fiery debating style and commanding stage presence, Kirk had become a prominent figure on the American far-right, building a massive following that played a crucial role in helping Donald Trump secure the youth vote during his presidential win last November.
From the very beginning, Trump treated the tragedy as a matter of national urgency. He was the first to confirm Kirk’s death and, on Friday, revealed on Fox News—before the official law enforcement announcement—that the suspect was already in custody.
The president has since ordered flags across the country to be flown at half-mast and confirmed he would personally attend Kirk’s funeral.
Breakthrough in the search

Investigators had earlier recovered what they believe to be the murder weapon, a high-powered hunting rifle. Surveillance footage released showed a young man in a baseball cap and casual clothes, believed to be the shooter.
In the early stages of the investigation, police briefly detained two individuals who were later found to be unconnected to the case, fueling concern that the probe was faltering.
Late Thursday, Orem authorities provided more details about the suspect’s appearance and initial escape route, appealing to the public for assistance in tracking him down.
According to FBI Director Kash Patel, Robinson was finally arrested at 10:00 pm on Thursday, approximately 33 hours after the deadly attack.

Cox praised the role Robinson’s family played in the breakthrough. “On the evening of September 11th, a family member of Tyler Robinson reached out to a family friend, who contacted the Washington County sheriff’s office with information that Robinson had confessed to them or implied that he had committed the incident,” the governor explained.
Students at Utah Valley University expressed disbelief and fear over the shooting, highlighting the broader climate of political polarization in the country.
Dave Sanchez, a 26-year-old student, described his grief: “We watch him all the time, and so it really does feel like one of your own family members, your own brother’s been killed.”
At Orem Park, hundreds of supporters wearing red MAGA hats and carrying American flags gathered for a candlelight vigil. The crowd prayed and observed a moment of silence in Kirk’s honor.
Jonathan Silva, 35, summed up the disbelief: “It still feels insane that this happened. It’s totally surreal.”

Calls for justice
Governor Cox declared that the state would seek the death penalty for Robinson. Trump endorsed the move, saying in his Fox News appearance, “I hope he gets the death penalty.”
Reflecting the political weight of Kirk’s death, Vice President JD Vance arranged for Kirk’s coffin to be flown to Phoenix aboard Air Force 2. A solemn video showed Vance resting his hands on the casket as it was carried off the aircraft.
Kirk has been remembered by supporters as a “martyr.” He co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012, an organization designed to promote conservative principles among young people. With his charismatic style, Kirk became a sought-after guest on television networks.
Beyond politics, Kirk was a devoted father of two who leveraged his social media platforms—TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube—to champion anti-immigration policies, Christian values, gun rights, and to circulate clips of his heated campus debates, which frequently went viral.
