Authorities in Mali have arrested about 20 soldiers accused of plotting to overthrow the military junta currently in power, multiple sources told AFP on Sunday.
The detentions began three days ago and are linked to what officials described as an effort to destabilise state institutions.
A Malian security source confirmed the arrests, while another military source acknowledged an “attempt at destabilisation” and said the necessary detentions had been carried out.
Among those taken into custody is General Abass Dembele, a respected officer and former governor of the central Mopti region. According to a source close to him, soldiers arrived early Sunday morning at Kati, near the capital Bamako, to arrest him without providing any explanation.
Mali, which has faced chronic instability since 2012, continues to grapple with deadly attacks by armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State across the Sahel region. The country also struggles with widespread criminal violence, sectarian tensions, and a deepening economic crisis.
