The Israeli military announced on Tuesday that it had eliminated Ali Shadmani, the chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces during wartime, in an overnight air raid on a high-level military command centre in central Tehran.
Shadmani was one of the Islamic Republic’s most senior military commanders, and his death marks another major escalation in the intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran.
According to a statement released by the Israeli military, the operation was executed by the Israeli Air Force based on “precise intelligence and a sudden opportunity,” which enabled them to strike the target with precision. The strike reportedly hit the command centre where Shadmani and other top military personnel were operating.
Shadmani was portrayed by the Israeli military as Iran’s top operational commander and a trusted aide to the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
He previously held top positions in both the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Iranian army, reflecting his deep influence across the country’s military establishment.
He was recently appointed as Iran’s wartime military chief following the killing of his predecessor, Alaa Ali Rashid, whose assassination in an earlier Israeli strike triggered the current wave of hostilities between the two nations.
The Israeli military noted that Shadmani’s death is a strategic blow to Iran’s military operations. “His elimination adds to a series of eliminations targeting Iran’s most senior military leadership and disrupts the chain of command,” the statement read.
The development comes amid the fifth consecutive day of direct missile exchanges between Israel and Iran, marking an unprecedented and dangerous shift in the long-standing but largely covert conflict between the two regional powers. The situation continues to attract international concern, with global leaders calling for immediate de-escalation.
What you should know
Ali Shadmani was among Iran’s most powerful military figures and was closely aligned with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. His assassination by Israel signals a calculated attempt to dismantle Iran’s top military command structure amid the ongoing war.
His death follows that of his predecessor, indicating that Israel is actively targeting Iran’s military leadership to weaken its strategic capabilities.
