India has officially placed a bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, a move seen as a strategic step toward strengthening its case to stage the 2036 Olympic Games, according to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
The bid proposal was formally presented by an IOA delegation at the Commonwealth Sport headquarters in London on Friday.
“This is not just a bid to stage a sporting event, it is our commitment to the Commonwealth family to deliver Games that are athlete-centred, inclusive, sustainable, and future-facing,” said IOA Executive Council member Harpal Singh in a telephone conversation from London, as reported by Reuters.
He continued, “Our vision is to use this milestone not only to honour the past but to set the stage for the future, ensuring the Games remain relevant, impactful and viable for the next century.”
Earlier in the week, India’s federal government gave the green light to sign the Host Collaboration Agreement (HCA), accompanied by the necessary assurances from the relevant ministries.

Singh, who also serves on the sports committee of Commonwealth Sport, described the bid as a “proud moment” that aligns closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “vision of bringing the Olympic Games 2036 to India.”
He added, “Successfully hosting the Commonwealth Games will demonstrate our nation’s capability, strengthen our international credibility and lay the foundation for the Olympic journey ahead.”
India will face competition from Canada and Nigeria, with the final decision on the host city for the 2030 edition set to be announced at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow this November.
The Commonwealth Games, which primarily involve nations from the former British Empire, have faced difficulties in recent years attracting willing hosts.
Scotland’s Glasgow is preparing to stage a scaled-down version of the event next year, after the Australian state of Victoria, originally selected as host, withdrew due to rising costs. Similarly, the 2022 Games were relocated to Birmingham after Durban, South Africa, was unable to proceed because of financial difficulties.
