Erling Haaland extended his remarkable scoring streak as Manchester City secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Villarreal in Tuesday’s Champions League clash at Estadio de la Ceramica.

Pep Guardiola’s men remain unbeaten in the group stage following the win, which was wrapped up in the first half through goals from Haaland and Bernardo Silva.

Manchester City vs Villarreal

The Norwegian striker, who has been in unstoppable form, has now scored in 12 consecutive matches for club and country, amassing an astonishing 22 goals during that run.

Guardiola made four changes to the starting lineup that triumphed over Everton at the weekend, opting to rest Phil Foden, as City ended a year-long winless streak away from home in European competition.

City began strongly, dictating possession and pressing Villarreal high. Haaland came close early on when he headed a Bernardo Silva cross just wide. The visitors’ pressure soon paid off in the 17th minute when Rico Lewis combined neatly with Savinho before cutting the ball back for Haaland, who hammered home from close range.

Despite Villarreal—currently third in La Liga—gradually finding rhythm, City doubled their lead before the break. Savinho delivered a precise cross for Silva, who headed past Brazilian goalkeeper Luiz Junior to make it 2-0 and effectively seal the game.

Midway through the second half, City suffered a setback when midfielder Nico Gonzalez limped off injured, adding to Guardiola’s concerns with Rodri Hernandez already unavailable.

The Premier League champions controlled proceedings for much of the game but faced late pressure as Villarreal pushed forward in the final 20 minutes. Gianluigi Donnarumma, City’s goalkeeper, produced a fine save to deny Nicolas Pepe’s powerful effort before the Ivorian headed wide moments later.

Pepe also volleyed over the bar, while at the other end, Haaland was twice denied by Luiz Junior, who pulled off brilliant saves to keep the scoreline respectable.

Guardiola handed Omar Marmoush his first appearance since August after recovering from a knee injury, introducing him in the closing minutes.

Villarreal’s best chance came late on when Renato Veiga’s header struck the post, leaving Donnarumma rooted to the spot. However, the Spanish side failed to find the net and remain winless in European competition this season, with just one point from their opening three games.

What You Should Know

Erling Haaland’s scoring form continues to power Manchester City’s Champions League campaign, as the English champions look poised for another deep run in Europe.

Tuesday’s victory not only extended Haaland’s goal streak but also ended City’s long-standing winless run away from home in continental competition, reaffirming Guardiola’s side as serious contenders for the title.
