Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has formally announced his defection to the Accord Party, days after parting ways with the Peoples Democratic Party.

The declaration was made on Tuesday at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, where he received national and state leaders of his new party.

Adeleke disclosed that the move was not sudden, explaining that he “joined the Accord Party more than a month ago, precisely on November 6,” adopting the platform as the vehicle for his 2026 re-election bid after extensive consultations with political stakeholders and community figures.

He emphasized that the decision was widely understood across Osun State, noting that the shift was aimed at securing a second term to continue “ongoing delivery of good governance and democratic dividends,” which he said had earned praise locally and internationally. Adeleke said the Accord Party appealed to him because its ideology of welfarism aligns with his administration’s commitment to the welfare of citizens and workers.

Welcoming party officials into the Government House, the governor declared that both sides were now one political family with shared goals for Osun and Nigeria. He stressed the need for unity ahead of the coming election season, saying leadership must remain inclusive to protect the interests of every group. Adeleke expressed confidence that the Accord Party would “take over Osun governance” and sustain progress across the state.

The governor reflected on his experience since joining Accord, praising its focus on people-centered governance. He maintained that the core responsibility of any administration is the wellbeing of the populace, a principle he said guides every policy and project under his leadership. According to him, Osun has witnessed unprecedented improvements across infrastructure and social services.

Adeleke described the Accord Party as the new political home for Osun people ahead of next year’s election, calling for widespread support from all parts of the state—from Osun West to the East and Central, and across various communities including Igbomina, Ijeshaland, Ifeland, Osogbo, Iwoland, Modakeke, Gbongan, Igbajo, Ikire, Ikirun, and Ede. He urged residents to “thumb up” for continuity in governance.

He maintained that Osun voters chose good governance in 2022 and would back continuation of that progress in 2026, insisting that the people overwhelmingly favoured stability and development. Adeleke concluded by formally declaring for the Accord Party “in accordance with the will of our stakeholders and to accord deep respect for the wishes of Osun people.”

What you should know

Governor Ademola Adeleke has officially moved to the Accord Party, revealing that he joined the party in early November to position himself for a second term in 2026.

He said the party’s ideology aligns with his administration’s focus on welfare and development, and stressed that Accord will serve as the new platform for governance continuity in Osun State.

Adeleke reaffirmed his commitment to inclusive leadership and described the defection as a decision supported by stakeholders and citizens who want sustained progress.
