Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has restated his position as the leader of the oil-rich state, assuring residents that his administration remains committed to maintaining peace, security, and public safety, while distancing itself from any actions capable of destabilising the state.
The governor made the remarks on Saturday while addressing guests as the special guest of honour at the grand finale of the 2026 Port Harcourt Polo Tournament held in the state capital.

He stressed that safeguarding lives and property remains central to his administration and reiterated his resolve to deliver on the commitments made to the people of Rivers State.
“What is important is that I am still the governor of Rivers State, and we will continue to do what we have promised the Rivers people,” he said.
Governor Fubara expressed delight that the week-long polo tournament was concluded without any security breach, describing the peaceful conduct of the event as clear evidence that Rivers State remains secure for residents, visitors, and potential investors.
“I am happy that you had your tournament for one week, and the president of the Port Harcourt Polo Club told me there was no incident. It shows that we are working and that Rivers State is safe. That is the basic responsibility of government,” he added.
Despite this, the governor voiced concern over the persistent political tensions in the state, observing that such crises have repeatedly coincided with the annual polo tournament over the last three years. He lamented that the event, which should be a celebration of sports and unity, has often been overshadowed by political unrest.
“It is really unfortunate that each time you are having your tournament, there is always one problem. In 2024, you came to me and made some promises, but that January was hell. In 2025, you didn’t bother to come to me. This 2026, which I thought would be the finest, just landed me a love letter,” he said.
Nonetheless, Governor Fubara assured stakeholders that his administration would remain focused on governance and continue to support individuals and organisations genuinely committed to the development of Rivers State.
He further promised that the state government would take steps to improve the Port Harcourt Polo Club, which is widely recognised for having one of the finest natural grass polo pitches in Nigeria.

The governor also encouraged visiting guests and polo players, including foreign participants, to enjoy the calm environment of Port Harcourt and to help correct negative perceptions about the state by sharing truthful and positive experiences.
The final match attracted several dignitaries, including the Argentine Ambassador to Nigeria, while polo players from across the country were in attendance, with teams from India and Argentina taking part in the week-long tournament.
