The Federal Government has officially announced the lineup of events for this year’s Democracy Day, with a keynote public lecture scheduled to hold on June 11.

The announcement was made on Thursday in Abuja through a statement issued by Segun Imohiosen, who serves as the Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).

According to the statement, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has set up an Inter-Ministerial Committee tasked with putting together a memorable and impactful commemoration of the Democracy Day Anniversary.

The SGF, represented at the inaugural meeting by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, underscored the significance of Democracy Day as a moment to honour and remember the sacrifices and contributions made by the country’s founding leaders and democratic figures who paved the way for civilian governance.

Bagudu remarked that the occasion serves as a moment of reflection on the arduous journey that led to Nigeria’s independence and the eventual end of military rule. He emphasized that marking this day annually is a way to preserve the legacies of those who dedicated their lives to the cause of democracy.

The events planned to mark the Democracy Day celebration begin with a press briefing and a special Juma’at service, both scheduled for June 6. This will be followed by a church service on June 8. A youth-focused programme is set to take place on June 9, before the public lecture scheduled for June 11. The celebration will reach its peak on June 12 with a presidential address to the nation and a ceremonial parade.

Senator Akume, as chair of the Inter-Ministerial Committee, is working alongside Engr. Nadungu Gagare, the Permanent Secretary of the Political and Economic Affairs Office at the OSGF, who is serving as the committee’s secretary.

The committee includes several high-ranking government officials and cabinet members, such as the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris Malagi; and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar. Also serving on the committee are the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Wike; the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; and the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, Hadiza Bala-Usman.

Other key members include the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; the Director General of the Department of State Services, Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi; the Commander of the Guards Brigade, Brigadier General Adebisi Onasanya; the Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office in the OSGF, Dr. Nnamdi Maurice Mbaeri; and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Kachollom Daju.

As outlined in the statement, the committee’s duties include coordinating and implementing all activities approved for the Democracy Day commemoration, bringing in relevant individuals or organizations that can contribute to the success of the celebration, maintaining a detailed record of all related events for historical purposes, and carrying out additional assignments deemed necessary to ensure a successful observance of the national event.
