The Federal Government has officially announced the lineup of events for this year’s Democracy Day, with a keynote public lecture scheduled to hold on June 11.
The announcement was made on Thursday in Abuja through a statement issued by Segun Imohiosen, who serves as the Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).
According to the statement, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has set up an Inter-Ministerial Committee tasked with putting together a memorable and impactful commemoration of the Democracy Day Anniversary.
The SGF, represented at the inaugural meeting by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, underscored the significance of Democracy Day as a moment to honour and remember the sacrifices and contributions made by the country’s founding leaders and democratic figures who paved the way for civilian governance.
Bagudu remarked that the occasion serves as a moment of reflection on the arduous journey that led to Nigeria’s independence and the eventual end of military rule. He emphasized that marking this day annually is a way to preserve the legacies of those who dedicated their lives to the cause of democracy.
The events planned to mark the Democracy Day celebration begin with a press briefing and a special Juma’at service, both scheduled for June 6. This will be followed by a church service on June 8. A youth-focused programme is set to take place on June 9, before the public lecture scheduled for June 11. The celebration will reach its peak on June 12 with a presidential address to the nation and a ceremonial parade.

The committee includes several high-ranking government officials and cabinet members, such as the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris Malagi; and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar. Also serving on the committee are the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Wike; the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; and the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, Hadiza Bala-Usman.
