The Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has officially received a 753-unit housing estate in Abuja, formerly owned by embattled former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
The property was handed over by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday at the Ministry’s headquarters in Mabushi, Abuja.
In a statement, the ministry’s spokesperson, Salisu Haiba, disclosed that the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, commended the EFCC for its anti-corruption efforts and commitment to asset recovery.
“This marks a significant milestone in our collective determination to ensure that recovered assets are put to productive use in ways that directly benefit the Nigerian people,” the minister said.
Dangiwa explained that the Ministry and EFCC will conduct a joint inspection of the estate to evaluate the integrity and safety of the buildings and infrastructure. The goal is to ensure the estate is suitable for habitation.
He announced that the housing units would be offered for public sale and government use, stating that the public allocation process will be “transparent and competitive.” A nationwide advertisement campaign will be launched, and interested Nigerians can apply through the Renewed Hope Portal.
EFCC Chairman, Olanipekun Olukoyede, described the handover as both symbolic and practical, underscoring the agency’s commitment to accountability.
“It is important for us to demonstrate to Nigerians that whatever proceeds of crime we recover, the application of that will be made transparent… We will not allow looted assets to be looted again,” he said.
