The Federal Government has directed that all charges against Comfort Emmanson, who was involved in an altercation aboard an Ibom Air flight on August 10, 2025, be withdrawn.
This move, announced by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, on Wednesday, follows consultations with key aviation stakeholders and individuals linked to recent incidents of passenger misconduct at Nigerian airports.
Emmanson had been remanded at Kirikiri Correctional Centre in Lagos State after allegedly assaulting a flight attendant and clashing with airport security personnel. She was arraigned on criminal charges before the Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Monday but remained in custody due to her inability to provide suitable sureties.
While condemning her behaviour, Keyamo also criticised the release of a viral video showing her in a compromising state, with her top torn during the confrontation. He confirmed that steps had been taken against the Ibom Air staff responsible for leaking the footage.

The incident prompted widespread condemnation from civil society groups, members of the public, and the Nigerian Bar Association, who accused the airline and the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) of mishandling the situation.
In his latest statement, Keyamo described the resolution as the result of mutual reflection and public awareness raised by the incident. He noted that both the passengers and airline staff involved committed clear wrongs and stressed that neither party could continue to claim injury without recognising their own role in the escalation.
Citing remorse shown by Emmanson and appeals from well-meaning individuals, the minister confirmed he had persuaded Ibom Air to drop its complaint. “When the Police took her statement in the presence of her lawyer, she exhibited great remorse for her conduct,” Keyamo stated.
Following the withdrawal, the Lagos Airport Command and police prosecutors have been instructed to take immediate steps to secure her release from Kirikiri this week. The AON has also agreed to lift the lifetime flying ban imposed on her, with further details to be announced later.
What you should know
The withdrawal of the case marks a significant turnaround in a dispute that had sparked public outrage over airline–passenger relations and the handling of security breaches.
The government says the episode has underscored the need for both passengers and aviation staff to adhere to airport security protocols, while also calling for better conflict de-escalation practices in the sector.
