The Federal Government has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic petrol tanker explosion that claimed more than 30 lives in Essa, Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State, on Tuesday.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, the government extended its condolences to the people of Niger State, describing the incident as another painful reminder of the devastating impact of tanker explosions on human lives and property.

“We join the Government and people of Niger State in mourning this painful loss,” the statement read. “This heartbreaking incident has once again brought to the fore the devastating human and material consequences of fuel tanker accidents in our communities.”

The government lamented that despite repeated warnings and ongoing public enlightenment about the dangers of scooping fuel from fallen tankers, some individuals still risk their lives engaging in the dangerous act.

Tanker Explosion In Niger State

“Every Nigerian life is precious, and such avoidable tragedies serve as a painful reminder of the need for greater vigilance and adherence to safety instructions in times of emergency,” the statement continued.

The government commended the swift intervention of the Niger State Government, security operatives, and emergency responders who promptly mobilized to put out the fire, rescue victims, and assist affected families.

According to the statement, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been instructed to support ongoing relief efforts and provide medical assistance to survivors and victims’ families. The National Orientation Agency (NOA) was also directed to intensify its nationwide awareness campaigns on safety practices, especially in rural and high-risk areas, to help prevent future occurrences.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the entire people of Niger State in this moment of grief. May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may God grant their loved ones the strength to bear this painful loss,” the statement concluded.

The explosion occurred after a petrol-laden tanker overturned along the Bida–Badeggi–Agaie Road in Essa community. Many of the victims reportedly lost their lives while attempting to scoop fuel from the fallen tanker before it ignited and exploded.

The incident serves as a grim reminder of the human cost of negligence and the urgent necessity of nationwide sensitization to prevent future tragedies.
