The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of Nigeria’s late former president, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London.
This declaration follows the seven-day national mourning period earlier announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to pay tribute to Buhari’s enduring legacy and service to the nation.

The announcement was made in a statement by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” the minister said.
He further urged all citizens to honour the late president’s memory by promoting peace, patriotism, and unity, key pillars of Buhari’s vision for a stable and prosperous Nigeria.
As previously directed, national flags are to remain at half-mast throughout the seven-day mourning period, which began on Sunday, July 13.
The Federal Government extended deep condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying for the peaceful repose of the late leader’s soul.
