US authorities released photos on Thursday of a man wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, as President Donald Trump led tributes to the 31-year-old conservative figure, calling him a “giant of his generation.”
Kirk, who rose to prominence as a Republican youth leader and was widely credited with helping Trump secure a return to the White House last year, was shot in the neck on Wednesday while addressing a packed audience at Utah Valley University. He collapsed in his chair moments later, sparking panic in the hall.

The FBI described the incident as a “targeted event” and confirmed that the shooter had escaped into nearby woodland. Special Agent Robert Bohls told reporters, “We’re doing everything we can to find him, and we’re not sure how far he has gone yet, but we will do our best.”
The bureau released grainy surveillance images of a man in a black baseball cap, sunglasses, jeans, and a long-sleeved shirt featuring an American flag design, asking the public for help in identifying him. Authorities also confirmed they had recovered what they believe was the murder weapon, a high-powered bolt-action rifle.
Trump, who announced Kirk’s death to the nation even before law enforcement issued details, described the killing as a “dark moment for America.” He accused the political left of fostering rhetoric that fuels violence. On Thursday, in remarks commemorating the September 11 attacks, the president honored Kirk and revealed plans to award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox, a Republican, called the shooting a “political assassination.” Students who witnessed the chaos described fear and uncertainty, with one, Samuel Kimball, saying it made him wary of sharing his political beliefs in public.
Kirk, hailed by supporters as a “martyr” for conservative ideals, founded Turning Point USA in 2012, a platform that mobilized young conservatives nationwide. Through social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, he promoted anti-immigration policies, Christian values, and gun rights, while using viral debate clips to broaden his reach.

The assassination follows a string of politically motivated attacks, including the July 2024 attempt on Trump’s life and the killing of a Democratic lawmaker and her husband in Minnesota three months ago. Vice President JD Vance was scheduled to travel to Utah on Thursday to meet Kirk’s family.
