A devastating explosion rocked Kano State on Saturday, resulting in the confirmed deaths of at least five individuals and injuries to ten others, according to official statements by the state police command.

The incident, which has left many residents shaken, involved a vehicle suspected to be transporting military-grade mortar explosives. Kano State Commissioner of Police, Adamu Ibrahim, confirmed the details during a press briefing at the scene, stating that the blast may have originated from an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) vehicle reportedly traveling from Yobe State.

“I received a call about the incident that had happened. When I arrived, I found that it was a suspected explosion – possibly an EOD on a military mortar bomb vehicle that exploded,” Ibrahim stated.

The force of the explosion left a total of 15 individuals affected. Emergency responders swiftly transported all victims to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where, tragically, five were pronounced dead while ten others remain under medical care.

Although initial reports suggest that the vehicle involved was carrying explosive materials, it remains unclear whether the transport was operated by military personnel or civilian contractors. “Preliminary findings suggest the explosive material was being transported by a trailer, but it remains unclear whether the vehicle was carrying military personnel or contractors,” the police commissioner added.

As of the time this report was filed, the exact cause of the explosion had not yet been officially determined. However, authorities have launched a full investigation to uncover the circumstances that led to the deadly blast.

The incident has sparked widespread fear and concern among Kano residents, with many expressing alarm over the transport of high-grade explosives through civilian areas. Some locals reportedly fled the vicinity immediately after the explosion, fearing additional blasts.

Security officials have since cordoned off the area and stepped up surveillance as part of efforts to ensure public safety and prevent further occurrences.

The Kano State Police Command has urged the public to remain calm but vigilant, assuring that updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
