The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will on Friday, August 15, 2025, bring 23 individuals before Justice Deinde Dipeolu of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, over allegations of internet-related crimes.

The suspects are among 93 people apprehended at a hotel located within the premises of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL).

In a statement issued by the EFCC’s head of media and publicity, Dele Oyewale, profiling of those arrested revealed that most of them face allegations linked to impersonation, identity theft, and various forms of internet fraud.

The arrests took place during a poolside celebration, which the EFCC said was organized by the suspects. Intelligence gathered by the agency indicated that the event was initially planned to take place at two separate venues but was later moved to the hotel within the OOPL grounds in an attempt to avoid detection.

According to the EFCC, the organizers had received hints about the commission’s awareness of their activities and decided to relocate, believing that holding the event at the OOPL would shield them from law enforcement.

“The former president’s facility was not a target of EFCC’s operations. The suspects were the targets and have confessed to their involvement in internet crimes. The arraignment of the remaining suspects is expected to follow shortly,” the statement read.

What you should know

The EFCC’s latest move underscores its continued crackdown on cybercrime in Nigeria.

The high-profile location of the arrests—the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library—has attracted significant public attention, although the agency has clarified that the facility itself was not under investigation.
