Ecuadorian footballer Jonathan Gonzalez, popularly known as “Speedy,” was shot dead on Friday, marking the third killing of a professional player in the country since the beginning of September.
Police confirmed that the 31-year-old athlete died from “gunshot wounds” after being attacked inside a residence in Esmeraldas, a coastal province bordering Colombia that has been plagued by violent drug gangs. Another person caught in the assault also died on the way to the hospital, though authorities did not disclose their identity. Investigators have yet to confirm a motive for the attack.

Ecuador, wedged between Colombia and Peru—two of the world’s largest cocaine producers—has become a key export hub for the drug trade, with about 70 percent of the global supply reportedly leaving through its territory. The resulting surge in gang violence has driven the homicide rate sharply upward, rising from six per 100,000 in 2018 to 47 in 2023, before slightly easing to 38 last year.
This killing follows the September 10 shooting of Maicol Valencia and Leandro Yepez, players for Exapromo Costa FC, during an armed assault in Manta. Valencia died immediately, while Yepez succumbed to his wounds two days later. Authorities said the footballers were not the intended targets of that attack.

Jonathan Gonzalez, who once played for Olimpia in Paraguay and León in Mexico, had most recently been with the second-division side 22 de Julio FC. In a show of solidarity, the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) and several clubs issued public condolences to his family.
