The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has unveiled a partnership with Vinmar Group, a global petrochemicals distribution firm, to export its polypropylene to international markets.

The announcement signals Nigeria’s ambition to transition from a major importer to a net exporter of polypropylene, a critical material in industries such as packaging and automotive manufacturing.

Since March 2025, the refinery has been producing 25kg bags of polypropylene for Nigeria’s domestic market, which imports 90% of its 250,000 metric tons annual requirement. The partnership with Vinmar Group will enable Dangote to tap into global demand, leveraging the distributor’s extensive network.

Fatima Aliko Dangote, an executive director at Dangote Group, stated at the facility’s launch, “We’re pleased to partner with Vinmar to introduce Dangote Polypropylene to the global markets.”

The refinery’s two polypropylene units, with capacities of 500,000 mt/year and 330,000 mt/year, are set to make it Africa’s largest polypropylene production hub when fully operational.

This initiative is expected to reduce Nigeria’s import dependency, boost foreign exchange earnings, and position the country as a leader in the African petrochemicals sector.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

The partnership marks a significant step for Nigeria, traditionally reliant on importing 90% of its 250,000 metric tons of annual polypropylene needs. By exporting polypropylene, Nigeria aims to become a net exporter, reducing import dependency and boosting foreign exchange earnings.

The refinery’s two polypropylene units, with capacities of 500,000 and 330,000 metric tons per year, will make it Africa’s largest polypropylene production site. This scale highlights Nigeria’s potential to lead the continent’s petrochemical industry.

The initiative could diversify Nigeria’s economy, which heavily depends on crude oil exports. Local production and global exports of polypropylene may create jobs, foster industrial growth, and attract investment in related sectors like packaging and manufacturing.

Partnering with Vinmar Group, a major international distributor, ensures Dangote’s polypropylene reaches global markets, enhancing Nigeria’s competitiveness in a growing industry driven by demand for plastics in packaging, textiles, and automotive parts.
