The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) has unanimously chosen Mr. Innocent Ohagwa as its president-elect during an extraordinary Governing Council meeting on May 1, 2025.

According to CITN Registrar/Chief Executive Afolake Oso, Ohagwa will assume the presidency from Mr. Samuel Agbeluyi on June 4, 2025, becoming the 17th president, with his investiture set for June 14, 2025.

Ohagwa, currently vice president and chairman of the Finance and General-Purpose Committee, brings over 35 years of tax administration experience, having retired as coordinating director at the Federal Inland Revenue Service.

A Fellow of CITN and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, he is also a Certified Information Systems Auditor with degrees from the University of Lagos and Bayero University, Kano, and executive training from Harvard’s Kennedy School.

Since joining CITN as an Associate Member in 1990 and becoming a Fellow in 1999, Ohagwa has held roles such as Honorary Treasurer, committee Chairman, Deputy Vice President, and Governing Council member since 2013.

Regionally, he was re-elected as Honorary Treasurer of the West African Union of Tax Institutes in February 2025, after serving from 2023 to 2025. His leadership is anticipated to drive further reform, innovation, and growth in Nigeria’s tax sector.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

The election of Innocent Ohagwa as CITN’s president-elect is a milestone for the institute and Nigeria’s tax profession.

His robust credentials, long service to CITN, and regional influence position him to lead with authority and vision.

As he prepares to take office on June 4, 2025, stakeholders in Nigeria’s tax sector will look to his leadership to drive meaningful progress in tax administration, professional development, and policy reform.
