Manchester City, Chelsea, and Newcastle secured Champions League qualification on a dramatic final day of the Premier League season, as Liverpool celebrated lifting their 20th league title with a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace.
With the title race and relegation already settled, all eyes were on the battle for European spots. Liverpool and Arsenal had confirmed their top-two finishes, while Tottenham joined them in next season’s Champions League after winning the Europa League.
City ensured their place among Europe’s elite for a 15th straight season by beating Fulham 2-0, with goals from Ilkay Gundogan and Erling Haaland. Chelsea clinched fourth place with a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest, thanks to Levi Colwill’s close-range finish, denying Forest a historic return to the Champions League since 1980. Forest will instead compete in the UEFA Conference League after finishing seventh.
Despite a 1-0 loss to Everton, Newcastle held onto fifth place, as Aston Villa missed their chance to overtake them. Villa, who were reduced to 10 men before halftime after Emi Martinez’s red card, had a goal disallowed in controversial fashion at Old Trafford before falling 2-0 to Manchester United. Amad Diallo and Christian Eriksen scored to lift United to a 15th-place finish, while Villa settled for sixth and a Europa League berth.
At Anfield, Liverpool’s celebrations were tempered by Palace’s early goal from Ismaila Sarr and a second-half red card to Ryan Gravenberch. Mohamed Salah equalized with a deflected strike to secure a point for the champions. Former manager Jurgen Klopp made an emotional return, joining in the celebrations held in front of fans for the first time since Liverpool’s 2020 triumph.
Elsewhere, Brighton stunned Tottenham 4-1 to secure eighth place, while Arsenal edged Southampton 1-0 with a late Martin Odegaard goal. West Ham defeated Ipswich 3-1, Leicester fell 2-0 at Bournemouth, and Wolves drew 1-1 with Brentford.
