Chelsea squandered the chance to climb to the top of the Premier League after Fabio Carvalho’s stoppage-time goal earned Brentford a dramatic 2-2 draw in Saturday’s derby clash.

Enzo Maresca’s men appeared on course for three points after Moises Caicedo’s thunderous strike, but defensive lapses allowed the hosts to level in the 93rd minute.

The Blues, who remain unbeaten this season, now sit fifth—just one point behind Arsenal, Tottenham, Bournemouth, and Liverpool. Maresca’s team selection, however, will face scrutiny, as his experimental lineup faltered early on.

A Flat First Half

Chelsea started sluggishly, struggling to create momentum with a number of fresh faces on the pitch. Jorrel Hato endured a difficult full Premier League debut, while Wesley Fofana lasted only 45 minutes on his first start of the season.

Brentford capitalised on their hesitancy in the 35th minute. Jordan Henderson picked out Kevin Schade with a perfectly weighted through ball, and the German winger cut inside Tosin Adarabioyo before driving a low shot into the bottom corner—his first goal of the campaign.

Palmer Inspires the Fightback

Maresca made three changes at the interval, introducing Marc Cucurella, Reece James, and Tyrique George. The switches added urgency, with George testing Caoimhín Kelleher before Cole Palmer was brought on in the 56th minute.

Palmer, back from injury, quickly made his mark. Five minutes after his introduction, Joao Pedro headed down Enzo Fernandez’s cross, allowing Palmer to slot home his first non-penalty league goal since January.

Robert Sanchez then denied Schade with a smart save, while Palmer missed a golden opportunity to double his tally, striking too close to Kelleher when through on goal.

Caicedo Strikes, But Brentford Hit Back

Chelsea took the lead in style through Caicedo, who latched onto Alejandro Garnacho’s cleared cross and rifled a stunning shot into the top corner.

But the joy was short-lived. In added time, Garnacho switched off defensively, allowing Kristoffer Ajer to flick on a long throw. Carvalho was left completely unmarked and tapped home to snatch a point for the Bees.

The late twist leaves Brentford in 12th place with four points from their opening four games, while Chelsea’s wait for top spot continues.

What you should know

Chelsea drew 2-2 with Brentford after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser from Fabio Carvalho.

Despite goals from Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo, defensive lapses cost them victory. The result leaves Chelsea fifth in the Premier League, while Brentford move up to 12th with four points.
