Moises Caicedo struck late to secure Chelsea a crucial 1-0 victory over Cypriot outsiders Pafos on Wednesday, edging the Blues closer to automatic qualification for the Champions League round of 16.

In Liam Rosenior’s first Champions League outing as Chelsea manager, the midfielder found the breakthrough in the closing minutes at Stamford Bridge, finally ending Pafos’ disciplined and stubborn resistance.

The win, Chelsea’s fourth from seven matches in the group stage, lifted them into eighth place on the table.

Victory away at Napoli in their final group fixture on January 28 is expected to be enough to seal a last-16 spot, depending on other results.

Failure to finish inside the top eight would force Chelsea into the more demanding play-off round.

Rosenior has now recorded three wins and one defeat in his opening four matches since arriving from Strasbourg to replace Enzo Maresca, who departed amid growing tension with the club’s hierarchy.

However, the evening was far from comfortable as Chelsea laboured to break down Pafos, inspired by an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Jay Gorter, before Caicedo finally delivered the decisive moment.

Some Chelsea supporters have drawn optimism from history, noting that the club’s Champions League triumphs in 2012 and 2021 both followed mid-season managerial changes.

Still, Rosenior remains a long way from replicating the feats of Roberto Di Matteo and Thomas Tuchel.

Chelsea have looked composed rather than spectacular under the new boss, with far more demanding tests expected ahead following his surprise appointment.

Rosenior made six changes from Saturday’s 2-0 league win over Brentford, while injured England forward Cole Palmer missed out with a minor strain.

Former Chelsea defender David Luiz, a Champions League winner with the club in 2012, was named on the Pafos bench, as the visitors showed no sign of intimidation in their first-ever meeting with English opposition.

Chelsea dominated possession but struggled for rhythm, and when Enzo Fernandez headed home from close range in the 18th minute, the effort was ruled out for a push.

The hosts nearly gifted Pafos a shock opener when a loose back-pass almost fell to Anderson Silva, but goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen reacted quickly to avert danger.

Momentum swung further when Jaja’s effort from inside the area deflected off Reece James and struck the post with Jorgensen beaten.

That scare jolted Chelsea into action, with Gorter pushing away a fierce Caicedo drive before Benoit Badiashile narrowly missed with a header.

Gorter continued to frustrate the Blues, denying Caicedo again from distance and producing another fine save to keep out Jorrel Hato before half-time.

With impatience growing in the stands, Rosenior made a double substitution at the interval, introducing Robert Sanchez and Estevao Willian.

Estevao almost made an instant impact, forcing another full-stretch save from Gorter, who later denied Pedro Neto and Caicedo once more.

Chelsea’s persistence finally paid off in the 78th minute when Pafos failed to clear a corner and Caicedo reacted quickest, guiding a close-range header into the far corner to seal the win.

What you should know
Chelsea’s narrow victory keeps them on course for automatic qualification from the Champions League league phase, where finishing in the top eight avoids the risk of a play-off round.

Liam Rosenior is still in the early stages of his tenure, and while performances have lacked flair, results have largely followed.

The final group match against Napoli will be decisive, as Chelsea’s fate may depend on both their own result and outcomes elsewhere across the competition.
