Bayern Munich’s midfield maestro, Jamal Musiala, is set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines after suffering a serious injury during his side’s Club World Cup quarter-final loss to Paris Saint-Germain in Atlanta on Saturday.
The German club confirmed on Sunday that the 22-year-old sustained a fractured fibula and a dislocated ankle following a collision with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The injury occurred late in the match as Bayern trailed 2-0 in what had been a tightly contested encounter. Musiala, one of the Bundesliga giants’ most influential players, went down after a forceful challenge by Donnarumma.
Though Bayern manager Vincent Kompany admitted the incident was accidental, club captain Manuel Neuer did not hold back, branding Donnarumma’s actions “reckless” and questioning the need for such an aggressive approach in that situation.
Musiala was immediately flown back to Munich on Sunday morning. Bayern stated that he will undergo surgery in the coming days. While the full recovery timeline has not been officially confirmed, multiple German media outlets report that the young playmaker is expected to be sidelined for approximately four to five months, a timeframe that could see him return to action just before the end of the year.
“This serious injury and the lengthy lay-off are a real shock for Jamal and us all. This hits FC Bayern,” said the club’s sporting director Max Eberl in an official statement. “Everyone knows how immensely important Jamal is for our game and what a central role he has in our team.
Furthermore, there’s also a huge human impact and we all feel for him: Jamal has just come back from an injury and will now be out for another long period. He’ll get everything he needs from us. We’ll support him intensively, be by his side and already look forward to when he’s back on the pitch.”

Musiala’s injury comes as a major setback for both Bayern and the German national team. He had only recently returned from a hamstring injury that kept him out of the closing stages of the 2024–25 season, including Bayern’s Champions League elimination at the hands of Inter Milan. That same injury also prevented him from featuring in Germany’s Nations League campaign in June.
His return to full fitness had seemed timely, especially after his spectacular hat-trick performance off the bench in Bayern’s 10-0 demolition of Auckland City in their opening Club World Cup fixture. His presence had given fans renewed hope ahead of what was expected to be a competitive semifinal showdown, hopes now dashed with his latest setback.
Neuer, speaking after the match, condemned Donnarumma’s approach, saying, “It’s a situation where you don’t have to go in like that; it’s reckless. He accepts the risk of injuring his opponent.”
Germany’s head coach Julian Nagelsmann also expressed concern, noting the impact the absence of Musiala would have on his squad as they prepare to launch their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign in September. “Jamal’s injury is a big shock for us as well, especially given he had just come back after a muscle injury. We wish him the best for the operation as well as a speedy recovery,” Nagelsmann said.
Musiala’s absence will force both Bayern and Germany to rethink their midfield strategies for the upcoming months. With his creativity, dribbling ability, and tactical intelligence, Musiala has been central to both teams’ plans, and filling the void left by his injury will be a daunting task.
What you should know
Jamal Musiala, Bayern Munich and Germany’s young midfield star, will miss the next four to five months due to a broken fibula and ankle dislocation sustained at the Club World Cup.
The injury, described by Bayern as a major blow, will keep him out of key matches for both club and country, including Germany’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
