Suspected bandits have killed an inspector of the Nigeria Police Force in Oyo State after launching an ambush on a patrol team at the Budo Masalasi border post area of the state.

The attack, which took place over the weekend, triggered fear and tension within the community, as residents and security operatives raised concerns about the rising threat of violent criminal activities in the area.

Reports indicate that the police patrol team was carrying out routine security duties when it was suddenly intercepted by armed attackers, who opened fire on the officers without warning.

During the gun battle that followed, the inspector sustained critical injuries and later died, while other members of the patrol team were also wounded in the attack. The injured officers were immediately taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment, although details of their condition were not made public.

The identity of the slain officer has not yet been disclosed, as police authorities are said to be awaiting formal notification of his family.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, Olayinka Ayanlade, said the command had launched a manhunt for the attackers.

According to him, the Commissioner of Police ordered an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident, with the aim of tracking down and arresting those behind the attack.

“There was an attack on police operatives during which an inspector, while courageously repelling the attack, paid the supreme price in the line of duty,” Ayanlade said.

“Immediately this information was received, the Commissioner of Police ordered an immediate manhunt and a comprehensive investigation. Preliminary findings indicate that some of the attackers sustained bullet injuries, and operatives are currently on their trail,” he added.

The police spokesperson assured residents that reinforced security measures are being deployed to forestall further attacks and ensure the safety of lives and property across the state.

He also called on members of the public to stay alert and support security agencies by reporting individuals with gunshot wounds, suspicious medical cases, or unfamiliar persons seeking refuge in their communities.

What you should know
The killing of a police inspector in Oyo State highlights growing security concerns around border and rural areas, where armed criminal groups have increasingly targeted security operatives.

Such attacks not only endanger law enforcement personnel but also heighten fear among local communities. Authorities say investigations are ongoing, with a focus on tracking wounded suspects and dismantling criminal networks operating in the region.

Public cooperation, especially timely intelligence sharing, is being emphasized as a critical factor in preventing further violence and restoring confidence in local security efforts.
