As preparations for the 2027 general elections gain momentum, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar visited ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, Ogun State, for a closed-door meeting that lasted two hours.

Atiku, the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, was accompanied by former Governors Senator Liyel Imoke (Cross River) and Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto State). However, both Atiku and Obasanjo declined to disclose details of their discussions, with Obasanjo stating, “Don’t ask me anything. I am not going to comment on 2027 politics.”

Despite their silence, political analysts speculate that the meeting was not just a courtesy visit. Dr. Ibrahim Modibo, speaking on Arise TV, inferred that the discussions could involve the internal crisis within the PDP and possible strategies for 2027.

Kwankwaso and Aregbesola Meeting Fuels Political Realignments
In a separate development, former Kano State Governor and NNPP presidential candidate in 2023, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, met with former Minister of Interior and ex-Osun Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, in Lagos.

This meeting has raised speculation about opposition strategies ahead of 2027, particularly as Aregbesola’s loyalists recently defected from the APC in Osun State, citing ostracization and unfair treatment.

Kwankwaso confirmed the meeting via his X handle, stating, “… I had the pleasure to visit the former governor of Osun State and former Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, at his residence in Lagos. The meeting afforded us the opportunity to engage in discussions on national politics, governance, and the future of Nigeria’s democratic landscape.”

Political observers believe these high-profile meetings signal possible realignments among opposition figures aiming to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC in 2027.

An insider source also hinted that discussions during Atiku’s visit to Obasanjo may have included Peter Obi, whom Obasanjo strongly supported in 2023.

While the politicians have remained tight-lipped about their true intentions, the series of meetings across party lines suggests potential coalition efforts ahead of the next elections.
