Summary

Arsenal powered past Bayern Munich with a commanding 3–1 win on Wednesday, defeating the Bundesliga leaders in a high-intensity Champions League encounter that reinforced their flawless start to the competition.

The Premier League side seized full control in the second half after 17-year-old Lennart Karl briefly brought Bayern level, with Noni Madueke restoring the Gunners’ advantage before Gabriel Martinelli capitalised on a major error by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to seal the result.

Bayern entered the Emirates Stadium at the top of the Champions League standings, narrowly ahead of Arsenal, with both clubs unbeaten after four straight victories. The match was slow to ignite, but Arsenal struck first in the 22nd minute when Jurrien Timber rose to meet a Bukayo Saka corner, heading into the net as a stretched Neuer failed to intervene. The opener once again highlighted Arsenal’s deadly precision from set-piece situations.

Eberechi Eze, coming off a hat-trick in Sunday’s 4–1 derby win over Tottenham, nearly doubled the lead but dragged his effort wide of goal. Arsenal appeared to be in control until Bayern equalised suddenly in the 32nd minute. Joshua Kimmich delivered an exceptional diagonal pass, which former Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry cushioned first time into Karl’s path, and the teenager finished accurately past David Raya.

Arsenal returned from the break with renewed energy, forcing Neuer into a sharp save as he pushed a fierce strike from Saka over the bar. Karl attempted to spark another moment of magic when he darted down the right and into the Arsenal box, but his tame finish was easily gathered by Raya. As momentum grew, Mikel Merino mis-timed a promising effort from another threatening corner, and Cristhian Mosquera saw his point-blank header stopped by Neuer’s quick reactions.

Arsenal’s pressure became relentless. Neuer blocked Declan Rice with his legs when the midfielder raced through, and Saka was unable to convert the rebound. The breakthrough arrived with just over twenty minutes left, when Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano misplaced a pass that substitute Riccardo Calafiori collected on the left wing. His cross found Madueke, who guided the ball into the net to restore Arsenal’s lead.

Bayern’s troubles deepened when Eze sent a lofted pass over the defence, catching Neuer well off his line. Martinelli brought the ball down brilliantly, skipped around the stranded goalkeeper, and raced forward to roll it calmly into an empty net. The home crowd erupted and aimed a mocking chant at Bayern striker Harry Kane, singing “Harry, Harry, what’s the score,” as the match slipped fully out of reach for the visitors.

Despite the defeat, both Arsenal and Bayern remain strong contenders to finish inside the top eight of the 32-team league phase, a position that guarantees automatic progression to the Champions League round of 16.

What you should know

Arsenal extended their perfect Champions League run with a convincing 3–1 victory over Bayern Munich, dominating the second half through goals by Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli after Lennart Karl had equalised earlier.

Manuel Neuer’s costly mistake deepened Bayern’s struggles as Arsenal controlled large spells of the match. Both teams, however, remain in strong contention for automatic qualification into the tournament’s last 16.
