The national electricity grid suffered another system collapse on Wednesday morning, plunging many parts of Nigeria into darkness. The outage occurred just after 11 a.m., disrupting power generation nationwide. Reports indicate that at 11 a.m., the grid was producing 4,064 megawatts, but this output sharply dropped to 1,203MW by 12 p.m. and completely fell to 0.00MW by 1 p.m.
Attempts to reach the spokesperson of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Ndidi Mbah, were unsuccessful, as she stated that she was attending an official event. However, sources within the power generation sector confirmed that a major disturbance had occurred across the grid, leading to significant power losses.
According to reports, there was a sudden system trip-off, causing power supply to cut off before noon. Most power plants connected to the national grid lost generation capacity when the collapse happened.
This marks the first nationwide grid failure in 2025. The previous year, 2024, saw 12 instances of grid collapses, while over 100 incidents have occurred within the last decade.
Confirming the situation, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) posted on its official X handle, informing customers about the outage. The statement read:
“Dear Valued Customer, we regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 a.m. today, causing a power outage across our franchise areas.”
The power distribution company assured customers that gradual restoration of electricity had begun and that efforts were being made in collaboration with stakeholders to stabilize the grid and fully restore supply. AEDC urged customers to remain patient as they worked towards resolving the issue.
