Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas have officially endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in office, signaling a unified front within the National Assembly in support of his 2027 re-election bid.
Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Summit held at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja, Akpabio, flanked by fellow lawmakers, declared the Senate’s confidence in Tinubu’s leadership. He argued that if Tinubu had not delivered in his first two years, the legislature would have considered impeachment proceedings.
“If this President has done well, is it us that will say so? If he has not done well, is it not us that will give him notice of impeachment?” Akpabio stated. “We are not giving him notice of impeachment… I move therefore as the Senate President that Mr President return as flag bearer of the APC unopposed.”
Tajudeen Abbas seconded the motion, asserting the support of all 109 senators, 360 House members, and speakers across Nigeria’s 36 states.
The Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) also reaffirmed its support for Tinubu. PGF Chairman and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, moved a motion—seconded by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani—endorsing Tinubu as the sole APC presidential candidate for 2027. Uzodimma pledged the governors’ full support to secure victory for Tinubu in their states, citing the president’s reformist agenda and leadership competence.
This endorsement by both the National Assembly leadership and APC governors builds upon recent support from regional factions such as the North Central governors, who praised Tinubu’s developmental policies and inclusive governance.
What you should know
The coordinated endorsements from Nigeria’s executive and legislative powerhouses highlight the APC’s strategic move to consolidate internal support ahead of the 2027 elections.
With the Senate President framing Tinubu’s performance as impeachment-proof, and the Speaker backing the endorsement on behalf of federal and state lawmakers, the ruling party is crafting a narrative of national consensus.
The governors’ alignment further reinforces Tinubu’s control over party structures nationwide.
This convergence of elite political support not only strengthens Tinubu’s bid but also signals the party’s intent to present a united front to the electorate, marginalizing potential internal dissenters and alternative contenders early in the political race.
