Summary
The city of Ahmedabad has officially been selected to host the 2030 edition of the multi-sport Commonwealth Games, marking a significant milestone for India on the global sporting stage.
This confirmation came on Wednesday after the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow approved the recommendation presented by the organisation’s executive board. The endorsement seals Ahmedabad—also known locally as Amdavad—as the host city for the centenary edition of the Games.
Expressing gratitude for the selection, Dr PT Usha, president of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, said India is “deeply honoured by the trust shown by Commonwealth Sport.” She noted that the 2030 Games will not only celebrate 100 years of the Commonwealth movement but will also “lay the foundation for the next century,” highlighting that the event will unite athletes, communities, and cultures under a shared spirit of unity and progress.

Ahmedabad, a prominent urban centre in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat, features major sporting infrastructure, including a 130,000-capacity stadium—recognized as the largest cricket stadium globally and named in honour of the Indian leader. This expansive facility positions the city as an ideal host for an event of such magnitude.
India has been increasingly ambitious on the global sports stage. Beyond hosting the Commonwealth Games, the nation has already submitted a formal letter of intent to the International Olympic Committee, signalling interest in hosting the 2036 Summer Olympics.
The Commonwealth Games movement itself faced challenges in recent years. Last year, uncertainty clouded its future after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew from hosting the 2026 edition due to financial concerns. The city of Glasgow later stepped in to organise a scaled-back version of the event, which will result in Britain hosting back-to-back editions after Birmingham successfully held the Games in 2022.
Despite longstanding conversations questioning the relevance of the Commonwealth Games—especially in an era filled with numerous continental and global multi-sport competitions—leaders remain confident about their future. The Games are exclusive to nations within the Commonwealth, many of which were previously part of the British Empire, leading to periodic debates about their modern-day significance.

However, Commonwealth Sport president Dr Donald Rukare expressed optimism, emphasising India’s suitability and appeal. He praised the country’s “scale, youth, ambition, rich culture, enormous sporting passion and relevance,” while confirming that several nations have also expressed interest in hosting future editions, including the 2034 Games.
The 2030 Commonwealth Games will hold historic weight, marking 100 years since the inaugural event, first held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada.
